ICSA 2008 Symposium Organizing Committee 

The 2008 Annual ICSA Applied Statistics Symposium will be held on June 4-7, Wednesday to Saturday, 2008, with short courses on June 4th and scientific sessions on June 5-7, at the Embassy Suite Hotel in Piscataway , New Jersey , USA . The Symposium will sponsor the Student Awards and Travel Grants. The main purpose of the awards is to encourage student members of ICSA to participate and present their research work at this annual conference.

Qualification: the student must be an ICSA member (or applying for ICSA membership) at the time of manuscript submission, a degree candidate in any term during the academic year 2007-2008 at an accredited institute and be able to register and present the research work at the 2008 symposium.

Manuscript Requirements: Manuscripts should be prepared double spaced using Biometrics or JASA guidelines for authors. They must be no more than 20 pages in length exclusive of tables and figures. Use one-inch margins and no smaller than 12 points type. The research work must be relevant to application in a variety of fields including biomedicine, finance, business, etc. The manuscript may be co-authored with a faculty advisor and/or a small number of collaborators, although the student must be the first author.

Submission of Manuscripts: The student can submit required documents through [1] electronic or [2] regular mail. The submission documents (manuscripts) should be received or postmarked no later than April 1, 2008 . The submission should include:

  • A cover letter;
  • One complete title page with author(s), institutional affiliation, mailing address, phone/fax numbers and email address;
  • The manuscripts with only a title, but no information on authors or affiliation, on the first page (Five copies of the manuscripts are required if you use regular mail); 
  • A page of abstract (Two copies of abstract are required if you use regular mail);  
  • A copy of ICSA membership application form for non-members (will go through a normal student membership application process). Membership application /renew forms can be downloaded from http://www.icsa.org. 

Review and selection process: The members of the Student Award Committee and J.P. Hsu Memorial Scholarship Committee will receive blinded copies of the submitted manuscripts from the Committee Chairs and review them based on the following criteria:

·        The manuscript should be well motivated by an application to the specific field(s);

·        The methodology developed should be applicable to the motivating problem. Inclusion of an application of the proposed methodology to a particular study will be favorably considered;

·        Organization and clarity of the presentation will be considered as well.

Up to 4 award winners will be selected by the Awards Committees.

Each winner will receive a winning certificate, $400, and tuition for one short course of his/her choice at the symposium. Winners will be notified around April 30, 2008 .
