We'll learn how to enter two variables, x and y, measured on five subjects.
This example will use a trivial toy data set constructed using the
integers 1-5. This data will be used later to construct a scatter plot and
correlation for these variables.
Suppose the data are

1. On entering SPSS, select the radio button indicating that you want
to input data. You'll be dumped into the spread sheet.

2. We want correlations between 1,2,3,4,5 and 1,2,3,5,4. Type
1,2,3,4,5 into the first five cells in the first column of the spread
sheet. After each number, hit the down arrow.

3. Now type 1,2,3,5,4 into the first five cells of the second column.
Again, use the down arrow button to jump to the next cell.

4. Now click on the tab labeled "variable view" on the bottom of the
spread sheet. You'll get another thing that looks like a spread sheet,
with two rows, one for each of the columns you just entered. The first
column gives variable names. Right now you have names like "VAR001".
Change these to "x" and "y", by typing x in the first cell of column
1, and y in the second cell of the first column. (When you do this for
your homework, or for real life, type in more descriptive names.)
You might now use this data set to draw a
scatter plot.
